Get Active Initiative
Reconnecting Youth with Sport
Many young people with physical disabilities, particularly those who can walk, disengage from sport between the ages of 10 and 25. The Get Active Initiative is designed to change that — by working directly with community sports clubs to create more inclusive, welcoming environments for this often-overlooked group.
About the Program
In 2023, Rebound WA received an Inclusion Grant from the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries to deliver a three-year inclusion initiative in Perth, Geraldton, and the South West.
This initiative supports sports clubs to better engage children and young adults with physical disabilities — particularly those who have drifted away from mainstream sport and are seeking a way back in.
Our Progress So Far
2024: We partnered with swimming and athletics clubs in Perth and Geraldton to develop tailored programs for youth with physical disabilities.
2025: We continued the work from 2024 while expanding to include badminton and para football. We also launched a program in the South West, tapping into a region with strong potential for inclusive sport development.
This phase of the initiative focuses on youth who can walk but may feel sidelined in traditional sporting pathways. Many of these individuals join community sport but eventually feel they don’t belong or contribute meaningfully — leading to the belief that sport isn't for them. We're here to change that.
The Next Steps
2026: We're continuing the previous 2 years work while broadening the program to include table tennis, and canoeing. We will also be including a wider scope of participants for the existing programs, whilst working to improve any offerings for any other sports.
2027 and beyond: Whilst the project will conclude in 2026, we will continue to provide the support to the original 6 sports, ensuring high quality education and training for any and all volunteers and staff, We will also be offering the resources we have developed and the learnings we have made to a wider breadth of sport, who may be hoping to follow in the footsteps of the original 6 sports.

Inclusive Club Training
A key part of the initiative is inclusion training for participating clubs. We’ve partnered with Sport4All to provide access to their online training platform and resources. While Sport4All’s training covers a broad range of disabilities, the content is highly relevant for supporting our focus group.
Required Modules for Club Volunteers:
Communication and Language
Disability, Accessibility, and Inclusion
Misconceptions and Unconscious Bias
Having an Inclusive Mindset
Practical Steps to Building Your Club’s Inclusive Culture
Each module includes a short video, workbook, club-ready resources, and a quiz. The total time commitment is under one hour and progress can be saved and resumed at any time.
You're also encouraged to explore the full course and additional resources, including a club accessibility assessment.
