Wheelchair Rugby

A sport like no other – Wheelchair Rugby is an intense, physical team game for male and female players, played indoors on a basketball court using highly specialised sports wheelchairs.

Unlike most adaptive sports, Wheelchair Rugby is not an adaptation of another game. It was created specifically for participants with impaired arm, hand, and leg function.

While there is no 'tackling' or player to player contact the specialised chairs facilitate strategic blocking and shepherding to stop the other team or create space for your teammates

A team scores when a player carrying the ball crosses the goal line. Importantly, there are on-court roles for athletes with a wide range of function levels and physical impairments.

Who Can Play?

In WA, anyone is welcome to play in our local competition, however, Wheelchair Rugby was designed for athletes with impairment in 3+ limbs so priority will be given to these athletes.

Games are played most weeks at the Herb Graham Recreation Centre on Wednesday nights. Contact us to find out how you can get involved.

Opportunities

For players wanting to go further, there are opportunities to compete at state, national, and international levels.

WA’s representative team is the West Coast Enforcers, who compete at the National Championships.
The Australian Steelers are the national team, competing at World Championships and the Paralympics.
