State Wheelchair Basketball League
Rebound WA is proud to host the State’s Wheelchair Basketball Social League – one of the longest-running adaptive sports competitions in Australia.
Wheelchair Basketball is Australia’s most popular adaptive sport, known for its fast-paced, dynamic team play and the use of specially designed sports wheelchairs.
We’ve been running the league since 1958 – the very first year wheelchair basketball was played in WA! From then until now, at least one season has been played every year.
With an A Grade and a B grade, the State Wheelchair Basketball League is a fantastic way to get active, make friends, and be part of a welcoming community for both the social player and competitive athlete.

FAQs
-
Most of the rules are the same, but there are a few key adaptations:
Traveling violation: More than two pushes with the ball before dribbling, shooting, or passing.
Lifting foul: Lifting your feet off the footplate or bum off the seat.
Contact fouls: If you instigate contact or hit a stationary player, it’s usually a foul.
For a simple guide, we recommend the Principles of Contact in Wheelchair Basketball Facebook group by Ross Dewell. For full details, check the IWBF official rules.
-
The league is open to all – people with physical impairments as well as able-bodied players. It’s mixed gender and all ages (we’ve had players from 12 to 60+).
Players just need to:
Be able to self-propel a manual wheelchair.
Catch and pass a basketball.
At higher levels, a classification system ensures fair play, but for our social league, we keep things simple.
-
Registration: Around $40 per season (varies by season length).
Weekly games:
$10 per person (using a Rebound WA sports wheelchair)
$5 per person (if you bring your own)
NDIS participants can pay upfront for a season — just let us know, and we’ll provide an invoice.
-
No. While some players bring their own chairs, Rebound WA provides a range of sports wheelchairs. These are light, agile, and designed for speed — they’re part of the fun.
-
We run two seasons each year:
Minor Season: March – June
Major Season: August – December
Games are usually on Monday nights (7pm & 8pm), except on public holidays.
Spectators are always welcome and entry is free. -
Mondays, 7–9pm, across two courts.
A Grade: More competitive play.
B Grade: Social and beginner-friendly.
Four teams per grade, with referees and a scorebench.
Finals and a Grand Final round out each season.
-
When: Anytime. We’ll do our best to place you in a team.
Individuals & teams: We accept both, but space for new full teams is limited.
The earlier you register your interest, the easier it is to secure a spot.
-
B Grade: Perfect for beginners and social players.
A Grade: Faster, more competitive, suited to athletic or experienced players.
Not sure? Come along and watch, or book a time to try a basketball wheelchair with one of our staff.
-
Yes. WA has state representative men’s, women’s, and junior teams, and many players progress to the national level. If you’re keen to go further, we’ll connect you with the right pathways.
