International Day of People with Disability 2018 Wheelchair Basketball Showcase

The Theme for International Day of People with Disability 2018 is empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring inclusiveness and equality. To celebrate the event and to raise much needed awareness for people living with disability, Rebound WA hosted its annual Corporate Wheelchair Basketball Showcase at Brookfield Place in Perth City on the 3rd of December.

The event was attended by various corporates such as PwC, Westpac, Insurance Commission of WA, KBR, and many more. The highlight of the day were the games between 6PR and Channel 9, and the pollies game which pitted the Government against the Opposition.

Each team was trained in the use of the Wheelchair and maneuvering techniques by a member of the Australian Paralympic team or a member of the State Wheelchair Basketball team.

All in, the number of participants at the event was upwards of 170. With many more onlookers and spectators.

This event raised much needed awareness for the great disparity in participation numbers between able bodied sports and disabled sports. This event also served to highlight some of the accessibility issues faced by physically impaired members of our community.
